Health Literacy
*Please note: if there is inclement weather we will move this training from in-person to virtual.
Health Literacy Training equips professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to communicate health information clearly, accurately, and in ways that people of all backgrounds can understand and use. This training focuses on reducing confusion, improving comprehension, and supporting individuals in making informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.
Participants learn how to apply evidence-based health literacy strategies—such as using plain language, limiting key messages, organizing information for ease of use, and creating culturally and linguistically appropriate materials. The training also emphasizes designing information that supports people with varying reading levels, language needs, and lived experiences.
By improving communication practices, Health Literacy Training helps organizations strengthen patient engagement, reduce preventable errors, improve adherence to care plans, and enhance health outcomes across diverse communities.
After this training, participants will…
- Be able to write clear, plain-language messages that remove jargon, simplify complex information, and make health concepts easier for individuals and families to understand.
- Know how to highlight and organize 1–3 key points so that the most important information is easy to find, reduces overload, and supports better decision-making.
- Use active-voice communication to give direct, actionable guidance that helps community members understand what they need to do and why it matters.
- Design materials with diverse audiences in mind, including varying reading levels, language needs, and cultural backgrounds, using visual supports when appropriate to enhance comprehension and retention.
