Cybercriminals are using text messages for phishing attacks. Like phishing emails, it is important not to click any links or download attachments for messages where you do not recognize the sender. If a message is unexpected or from an unknown number check for the following:
- Bad grammar
- Misspelled words
- Asking you to act urgently.
Verify any concerning details from the message by navigating directly to the official site in a different browser or window and login there.
Recently there has been a wave of cybercriminals impersonating postal services worldwide using this SMS phishing method. In this scam there is a text sent to your mobile device saying that a package is unable to be delivered and to click the link for more information. If the link is clicked there will be a spoofed website that will prompt you to enter personal details that are collected by cybercriminals which allows them access to any information stored on your mobile device.
