Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the top technology scams facing the healthcare industry in 2025; but what can be done to protect against AI scam attacks?
Before getting into the risks and protections against AI it is important to understand what AI is. AI is technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human learning, comprehension, problem solving, decision making, creativity and autonomy. AI systems use large datasets to analyze information, make predictions, and adjust to new scenarios through machine learning without needing to be programed for every task. AI software and systems are being adopted throughout every industry, including healthcare, and with that issues of data security and privacy are more prominent. The more data that AI systems are able to ingest the more they are able to adapt, which is why it is important to evaluate the risk-level before implementing AI systems and services. AI is being used to enhance malicious social engineering campaigns to tailor scam emails using large language models (LLMs) that help to avoid normal telltale signs of phishing emails, such as misspellings and grammatical errors.
To help protect yourself and your organization it is important that you stay up to date with understanding what AI systems are used and what data they collect and utilize. Ensure that you review your organizations security and privacy policies as they pertain to the proper and acceptable use of AI within your organization.
