Celebrating Ability in Action: The Impact of Special Olympics

Across New York State, including right here in communities like Tompkins County, Broome County, and throughout the Southern Tier, something truly special is happening every single day. Athletes are stepping onto fields, into gyms, onto courts, and into spaces where they are not just welcomed, but celebrated. That movement is the Special Olympics New York.

While many people first think of competition when they hear “Special Olympics,” what’s really being built is so much bigger. This is about confidence growing in real time. It’s about friendships forming. It’s about people being seen for who they are and what they can do.

At its heart, Special Olympics New York provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. And what makes this even more powerful is that participation is completely free, opening the door for anyone who wants to be part of it.

Across the state, more than 45,000 athletes are involved, supported by thousands of coaches and volunteers who show up again and again to make this possible. That kind of collective effort creates something you can feel the moment you walk into a practice or event. It’s energy. It’s encouragement. It’s community.

Athletes train, grow, and compete in more than 20 Olympic style sports, from basketball and track and field to swimming, bowling, and bocce. But the real wins go far beyond the scoreboard.

It’s the athlete who tries something new for the first time.
It’s the teammate who cheers louder for others than for themselves.
It’s the moment someone realizes they are capable of more than they ever thought possible.

That’s what this movement creates.

In regions like the Southern Tier, including Tompkins and Broome Counties, this work is deeply local. Athletes are practicing in their own communities, supported by neighbors, families, and volunteers who are invested in their success. It’s not something happening far away. It’s happening here, in our schools, our gyms, and our shared spaces.

And it doesn’t stop with sports.

Unified Sports bring people together, with and without intellectual disabilities, as teammates. These shared experiences build understanding naturally, breaking down barriers in ways that feel genuine and lasting.

School based programs are helping the next generation grow up with inclusion as the norm, not the exception. Students are learning, playing, and leading together, creating a culture of respect and connection from the very beginning.

Health and leadership programs are giving athletes even more opportunities to grow, whether that’s through access to health resources or stepping into roles where they can advocate, lead, and inspire others.

All of this adds up to something incredibly powerful.

Special Olympics New York is creating spaces where people feel confident.
Where they feel connected.
Where they feel like they belong.

It’s changing how communities see ability, strengthening families, and bringing people together in ways that truly matter.
