In 2019 Care Compass Network launched the Workforce Transformation Pilot Program which awarded funding to 8 out of a total 21 submission by partner organizations. Cayuga Medical Center submitted an application and were awarded funding to implement a mentor program to provide training for new Operating Room employees at the hospital.
The Operating Room Employee Mentor Program was setup to give new RNs a ‘hands-on’ training experience utilizing a simulation Manikin which can help employees feel more comfortable and confident when handling certain situations. Simulations include demonstration of high risk/ low frequency situations like a CODE Blue or massive transfusion events, a demonstration of bringing a patient into the OR and moving to the OR table, positioning and prepping for carpel tunnel procedure, Orthopedic positioning, patient skin antisepsis (abdominal and extremity), and positioning for Robotic and Laparoscopic GYN procedures to name a few.
So far this year, the training program has seen huge success with supporting the needs of incoming new RNs, and is beginning to see growing interest among other hospital departments. Having the ability to utilize this program across multiple disciplines will help staff gain confidence while practicing skills, which is translating to an improved patient experience and better health outcomes.
